What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Once it has fused with the bone, a custom ceramic crown, bridge or denture is attached on top. It is the only common tooth replacement that supports the jaw in the same way a natural root does.

Implants are used for a single missing tooth, several teeth, or to hold a full arch of teeth securely. At KBM Dental in Rathfarnham we plan each case around the shape of your jaw, your bite and your gums, and we explain every stage before it happens.

Implants may suit you if

  • You are missing one or more teeth and want a fixed, non-removable replacement.
  • You would rather not have a bridge that relies on grinding down neighbouring teeth.
  • Your dentures feel loose and you would like them anchored securely.
  • Your gums are healthy, or you are happy to treat any gum disease first.

What to expect, step by step

  1. Consultation and scan

A relaxed conversation, a full check of your teeth and gums, and imaging to assess the jawbone.

  2. Your written plan

We explain the options, the number of visits and the cost in writing. There is no pressure to decide on the day.

  3. Placing the implant

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, and you are given clear aftercare advice.

  4. Healing

The implant needs time to fuse with the bone. We review how it is healing before moving on.

  5. The final tooth

Your custom crown, bridge or denture is fitted and shaded to blend with your natural teeth.

Implants, bridges or dentures?

Implant

Stands alone without relying on neighbouring teeth. Involves a minor surgical stage and a healing period.

Bridge

A fixed option that is usually quicker, but it is anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap.

Denture

Removable and often the simplest route. Implants can be added later to make it more secure.

Appointments are at KBM Dental in Rathfarnham, Dublin 14. Patients also visit from Churchtown, Milltown, Clonskeagh and the wider South Dublin area. Treatment starts with a consultation, so the plan and the cost are clear before you decide.

Dental Implants: your questions answered

How much do dental implants cost in Ireland?

Every mouth is different, so we do not publish fixed prices. After a consultation you receive a written treatment plan with the cost before anything begins, and there is no obligation to go ahead. The cost depends on how many teeth are being replaced and whether any preparation, such as gum treatment, is needed first.

How long do dental implants take?

It varies. The implant needs time to fuse with the bone before the final tooth is fitted, so treatment is spread over several months. We give you a realistic timeline in your treatment plan.

Does getting an implant hurt?

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Some tenderness afterwards is common and we give you aftercare advice to manage it.

Am I suitable for an implant?

It depends on your jawbone, gum health and general health. Age alone is not the deciding factor. The only way to know is a consultation and scan.

How do I look after an implant?

Brush and clean between them as you would natural teeth, and keep up regular hygiene visits. Healthy gums are what keep an implant stable long term.
