What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by attaching a false tooth, called a pontic, to crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. It is fixed in place, so you do not take it out.
A bridge restores your bite and smile, and helps stop neighbouring teeth from drifting into the space. It is often a quicker route than an implant.
A bridge may suit you if
- You are missing one or a few teeth in a row.
- The teeth beside the gap are strong enough to support crowns, or already need them.
- You want a fixed solution without a surgical stage.
- An implant is not suitable, or you prefer a shorter treatment.
What to expect, step by step
Assessment
We check the teeth beside the gap, your gums and your bite.
Preparation
The supporting teeth are shaped and an impression or scan is taken.
Temporary bridge
A temporary bridge covers the area while the permanent one is made.
Fitting
The bridge is checked for fit and appearance, then cemented in place.
Bridge or implant?
Bridge
Quicker and with no surgery, but the neighbouring teeth are prepared to hold it.
Implant
Leaves neighbouring teeth untouched and supports the jawbone, but takes longer.
Appointments are at KBM Dental in Rathfarnham, Dublin 14. Patients also visit from Rathmines, Donnybrook, Ballsbridge and the wider South Dublin area. Treatment starts with a consultation, so the plan and the cost are clear before you decide.
