Composite Bonding Explained: What It Is and What to Expect

Composite bonding is one of the most searched-for cosmetic dental treatments in Ireland, and one of the questions we hear most often at our Rathfarnham clinic. Here is what it actually involves.

What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin that is applied to the tooth, sculpted by hand, hardened with a curing light and then polished. Because it bonds to the surface of the tooth, little or no natural tooth needs to be removed.

What can it improve?

  • Small gaps between the front teeth
  • Chipped or worn edges
  • Uneven or short teeth
  • Mild discolouration that whitening cannot reach

When it is used across the front of the tooth to change its overall look it is often called a composite veneer. You can read more on our composite bonding and veneers page.

What happens at the appointment?

  1. Consultation. We look at your teeth and bite and talk about the change you would like.
  2. Shade matching. We select a resin shade to blend with your natural teeth.
  3. Sculpting. The resin is built up in layers and shaped, then hardened with a light.
  4. Polish and bite check. The surface is finished to a natural sheen and we make sure your bite is comfortable.

Many cases can be completed in a single visit.

Composite bonding vs porcelain veneers

Composite is more conservative and easier to adjust or repair, while porcelain is more resistant to staining and suits larger changes. Neither is right for everyone. See our guide to porcelain and composite veneers.

How do I look after bonding?

Brush twice daily, clean between your teeth and keep up your hygiene visits. Composite can pick up stain over time, so we suggest limiting heavy staining foods and drinks and avoiding biting hard objects or nails. If you grind your teeth, ask us about a night guard.

What does composite bonding cost?

The cost depends on the number of teeth and the complexity of the shaping, so we do not publish a fixed price. After a consultation you will get the cost in writing before anything starts.

If you are thinking about bonding, the next step is a conversation. Make an enquiry and we will arrange a consultation.
